WTB: Quad Line Power Kite 3m? (Ozone, Beamer, etc..)
mystainedskin replied to Bolo's topic in Kites for Sale, Swap or Trade
Might get lucky...but I doubt it..have you checked http://www.powerkiteforum.com a very active for sale section going on. -
I would imagine it flies much like the HQ Mojo. With and without the "sticks". Fairly stiff... afyer some use the l.e. connectors at the verticals will become forgiving and the l.e. rod will start popping out at that location. Are there caps at the outer l.e...if not the rod will start poking through the pocket...effecting performance and control until it finally pops through.. Just speculation from the design and have flown a MoJo a good bit.

I normally don't care for my stuff very often. I do admit occasionally washing things down with the hose...but nothing more. It just gets used to much. 90% of my flying is on the beach these days. I agree 100% that it's a harsh environment for the lines , kites, and rods more than you would think...

Peter Powell Triple Sky Stunter (7/1/14)
mystainedskin replied to John Barresi's topic in Current Drawings
Nice... enjoy! -
So recently I aquired a set of Shanti Skybond 100'x100# quads. I told myself in the beginning...I would fly both major makers and form my own views on what I liked. So no better time than now! I have flown a full year or so with LPG, different weights and lengths..so time for a change. I have about 50 hours or so on this Skybond set. I have to say that I am liking them. After flying opk with Skybond lines, my interest peaked even more... good timing as I am in need of all lenghts and weights again. My initial thoughts were super slippery. The coating used is great so far. A little color fade...but the set has been in the ocean completely for many hours...I swim and fly or float and fly. .hit sandbars...etc... I hope in the long term...this coating holds up, I dig it. Almost has waterproof properties when wet...sheds water very quick. On the plus side....no clumped up sandy lines when winding up Smaller diameter line compared to Lpg..which equated to less drag and a more direct feeling between me and the kite...almost like running a lighter weight line. I am tickled "yellow" so far and looking for the long term picture as I begin the switch..... I only have 1 gripe with LPG in the end...longevity. I have been wearing out sets at alarming rates...even with regular rotation.up and down..and switching ends. So we will see what transpires from a change this year... What do you fly and why? If you fly Skybond already.... what's your comparison to LPG?

I just like throwing fuel on the fire..inspiring thought and debate. In the end, it's all about what makes "YOU" smile. It has to feel right in your hands. I see benefits in Magic Sticks for alot of people...myself included in certain situations. But being I "don't" fly them....that side of the story is also good to be heard. I can go fly a kite with them all day no problem. Same without.. sure I may have to walk to the kite here and there to remedy something, with and without sticks. I have watched guys yank a kite around for what seems like 5 minutes instead of going and correcting the issue....claiming/preaching the whole time "the sticks will clear the problem"....there are flip side stories to every "benefit". I have flown next to someone tricking a rev with sticks..while I am not...doing all the same exact stuff. Me, myself, and I don't have the reverse issue. Sometimes it does happen, with and without sticks...thats an environment issue and over control in that specific time and place. I feel that as a beginner or novice Rev pilot..you will see tremendous benefits. On the flip side...if you learn to fly the kite first, there are no where near as many positives in the equation. Along with always having issues flying opk... unless it has sticks. Sortof limiting yourself and enjoyment. Me personally. ..still feel you should mix it up and use both for determined amounts of time. Work on both sides of the story. It will only make you that much better...... Sorry for the long post...but I am bored. JB hasn't made it to Florida yet Maybe I will go start a thread on Skybond line now...really get the flames going

Sticks for me ... like pool You go practice on a big boys table....then goto the bar and hustle on the small table.. I don't fly them except on opk and the tester. So I learn to do all the stuff without them. Then , when I do fly opk with sticks it is usually a small adjustment to achieve desired results. Some stuff is easier or requires less effort..mentally and physically. Some stuff is trickier and requires more finesse. I would like to have 2 of everything. 1 with. ..1 without

I received a solid core bungee with some winders recently...gave me enough to do another swap. This has less tension than the stock...About the same as the replacement I used..But return is quick and precise and not to spongy. Should be more durable than the corded version. You can do some wild stuff with this size for sure. I have a few other priotities on the kiting needed list....but some sticks are in order. Atleast for a little while

....just learn how to not use a stake Launching and safe storage IS possible from all positions Just razzing you....whatever floats your .....rev

I agree with the equalization of lines , leaders, and bridle check. The 50# is a great suggestion..I fly on both weights with the b2 and rev2...but 50# definitely will help. Also your skill level? I found in the beginning, the 9" handles to be much more foregiving...that's what it came with. That sail requires a good wind to fly powered..otherwise it will be a challenge.
-
You would be suprised how little it takes....and then there is fan assisted. Locals fly up and down the coast in virtually nothing. But you have to remember wind levels...they normally run high enough to catch way cleaner wind than what we play in....but then there is urban play also...some sick stuff on youtube.
-
I fly everything stock..other than a handle mod. In no way am I saying the b2 doesn't fly well. In the right conditions. .it ROCKS! And the full vent is one of my favorites...throw axels to flic flacs in high wind. The sail pops like a leather belt snap The low to no range is what I am shooting for...short, stout, compact, quick. ..like an assualt rifle for an urban soldier. The 1.5 suites me well in this situation...but just a little too big. Especially, public places crowded by the public. The Zen even bigger..it may be a case of the burrow following the carrot. ..but it's fun learning and experimenting. Nothing major like sail redesigning. ..just quick and easy stuff. 5/10 minute top type of things . ..so Heeeehaaw.....is that the right sound?

only 2 wrap as of now..but along with the bungee and no bridle it has been fun. Flew in about 4 mph at Everbank field yesterday on 30'...interesting and the most wind I have put the test subject in so far.I plan on doing a p90 or tapred rod setup sometime soon....just for giggles guys and gals. I have alot of time available to play compared to most people.

This is a different flavor of kiting. But I feel the sentiment can be felt in whatever style of flight brings you a smile... We Fly Because:

Another good 30' session. 2 wrap, softer bungee,13"handles (cause the big ones are occupied right now) no bridle and some light wind. It was fun. I still felt a floaty or shedding sensation at times. But the sail loaded fairly well. Control is still not there like I want..but double axels no doubt...with just a subtle flic. I like the no bridle setup...so much less in the way. I think that part will stay gone for awhile. Thought I would be Fabrice Balden for a minute with some half axel to catch and throw...went fairly well. I was suprised! Even got a fade or 2 accidentally Along with some throw launches with a wrap on the kite This is going to be a fun journey!

Congrats!

Love it. Something so simple... you could make them..but for the price of a good led and battery..you could get several of these, disposable too a point. I have some of the twisting waterproof ones from this site..single led. Wedge them between the bungee and l.e. rod on the wingtips. They are a bit heavier than these. Also a different shape and wouldn't work for this setup.
-
One thing too point out. Our initial setup was at the rear of the stick, farthest from the kite. This will produce a larger light circle on the sail.
-
All of the above

I don't have a Zen, but do have a Rev 1..and will fly it in nothing with a 4 wrap. It's not fun...but alot of sail surface to work with and different flying style for me. But for the style of flying I am working towards...it's the wrong kite. I really feel the B2.. is that kite. I just have to get it tuned to my preferences. Flew the new bungees again today.Still had issues but felt much better in low to no enviroment. Although, the bungee used doesn't like concrete. Broke 1 outer tip bungee. This is old stuff..but may look for something a tad different. Solid core...as this was stranded. I think it is step towards a better feel..for me. Going to continue flying it..I have a bunch of the bungee and need more time to get a good answer on the changes. Also Burkas attachment conversion and a frame is in order...
-
As with the other sails...I will try to fly them in nothing. Like you said,it is more work...but alot of the time that makes it more fun and challenging. I never priced out rods...but have heard many stories of P90s being used in these and other size sails due to cost. Also tapered rods.Running with what is on hand right now. I almost feel as if the kite is too light even with light and flexible frames. Therefore not creating the flex and reactions that I am looking for. May play with a little weighting. I like these kites in wind..but as skypuppet mentioned...that low range on the standard would be nice. Small and compact..great for some urban and night short line action. Slack line stuff is off the charts, even in low wind. This is what happens when you become a kite bum and have too much time on your hands
-
Test flight 1 done...30'x50# and 2 wrap frame. Felt and reacted different for sure.. good?? Bad? More flying is needed to determine that. Wind speed and direction super erratic. The initial pump and control felt good..
-
More of a low wind mod. When there is little wind to create that tension. Bungee strech and hold a little..compared to a stretch and quick return. I already tweaked the bridle at outer edges and center for a little more cup. Also have a pigtail at the center for tuning....in or out.
-
Looks as if the l.e. is a small diameter rod also. Here is the bungee I used. Did the outer wingtips and lower verticals. Give a fly tomorrow and see what happens with a 2 wrap frame. The tension and return rate is less than stock bungee.
-
I agree with the lighter and tapered frames. But even on top of that... I have a bundle of bungee from inside some tent rods is what made me start thinking. I may whip the kite out and swap them out. It appears to be about a third less tension...just a guesstimate.
