This is a great little kite, big bang for the buck... I won one of these as a KL member drawing almost 10 years ago. It still gets flown once in a while, usually while handing it's lines off to a new pilot. Very trick capable, but needs more than 5mph of wind to get it going. Jump on this, you can't get more kite than this for the $$$ !

Wow, that is a sweet lookin' ride. I'd like to ride that for about a 1/2 hour, but wouldn't want to own it. Totally agreed about kiting being a good bang for the buck, compared to other hobbies/sports/activities that I've been involved with, kiting is really cheap. I think I spent more on one season of racing than I've ever spent on kites. Didn't know the State parks actually stop charging on the weekends, I just don't go unless I'm meeting others. I have 3 village beaches and 2 town beaches within 10 minutes of my house that have great flying, and I have a get-in-free sticker for both. I only fly at the State parks on weekdays (after work). Too bad the town has had to put a leash on the MC parade, but with hundreds of bikes coming into town on the weekends, I think everyone else was getting overwhelmed. I like the MCs and hotrods, but I'm not in the majority.

Right by the Pilgrim State grounds (just east) is a good flying field, I think it's called Brentwood park, it's right across from SCCC. A little further east is Bald Hill, right off exit 63N, it has pretty good wind from all directions (being the highest point on LI). The beach crowd isn't too bad on the North Shore during the week, but you have to get there early on the weekends. The State Parks are still charging admission on weekends, I don't know if they stop once it actually turns winter, but I know that Sunken Meadow & Heckshire SP are still charging. Didn't know you were part of the motorcycle parade that rolls into PJ every weekend... my kids know just about every kind of motorcycle, and even different Harley models. Not that I ride (not on LI !) but the motorcycles are a big deal here.

Just wondering, I'm not up on the Monster... is it a full sized kite ? I'm counting the boards in your deck to estimate size, but can't tell if they're 4" or 6" boards... I do love the looks of the kite, the choices in colors & even the thread are spectacular !- 7 replies

Hey Ralph, looking forward to hearing more about your time at the beach, and the NEW Prism kite that you couldn't fly...
-
Hey Frank... I've flown at Crab Meadow, it's a good spot ! Also, Sunken Meadow is good, but sucks because they charge admission. West Meadow beach is good, too. Let me know when you want to test-fly some kites with sticks, I have a few dual line & quad line kites. I am getting lazy as the years go on, and fly single line kites while sitting in a beach chair, too. Lanie's store is a short walk from my house. Too bad you missed the days when more than half her store was filled with kites. I bet she lit up when you came in, shopping for a kite, though. ~Rob.

Seriously... North Shore of LI ? It almost sounds like you bought your kite from Lanie... It's exciting news to hear that there's a local looking to get into kiting. I was flying on Sunday at Cedar Beach, and yes, the wind was a little low, I only flew for a few hours before packing it in. Welcome to the forum, hopefully we'll find each other on the beach & enjoy some good wind !

Since I made that post... first post on the new forum, I somehow acquired a 'Reply' button on forum topics. Yeah.... weird, but no problems here.

That's what I call ironic wind... I can't count the number of times that I've put the kite back in the bag, felt the ironic wind, gotten the kite back out only to have the wind fail as soon as I was ready to fly !

Ahhh, the human resistance to change... gets stronger as you get older, or so I've found. Is it me... I can't find the 'reply' button on other threads. I found the button for 'create a new topic', and that seems to work. If it's a glitch, I'm using Chrome on a PC. Usually worked best with the old version of the forum, but I haven't tried IE or Firefox. UPdate... I lost my reply buttons again, but I can edit this original post. I can also choose to 'like' someones' comment. If it goes like last night, I may be able to reply after adding to this post... let's see... Nope... my 'reply' buttons still didn't come back. Strange, 'cause they were here this morning when I checked in. OK, just checked another post, and I could reply to that one. I guess my user level isn't high enough to reply to posts in this particular category... but high enough to create a topic & edit it... just can't reply to it. Yes, this kinda stuff is funny to me, being a hardware tech. Things like this are why I gave up on programming & software in the 80's !

This is a great kite... real smooth flier ! Light pull, too, great for smaller pilots...

Hey Josh... I spent a lot of time in the Winston/Salem area about 15 years ago. The Flow autogroup was a big customer of mine, and I spent about a week each month there before they got an in-house IT group. I'll bet a lot of things have changed there in the years since. I never flew a kite there, but we used to spend a lot of time playing Frisbee after hours in well-lit parking lots around town. The Frisbee was good there because there was little wind....

Didn't notice... I had deleted years worth of PMs just before the forum update because of a problem I was having with my account. I wasn't getting PMs, so just whacked the whole lot of them to try to fix that problem. Glad the forum upgrade went well, I haven't seen any problems.

I've flown in the rain, the snow, and also in & out of the salt water... never had any problems with putting the lines away wet. My linesets last me about 3-5 years, maybe they would last longer if I treated them nicer ? Eh, I don't care, I'm happy with replacing them every once in a while, 3-5 years matches the modern description of a 'durable good'.

Aura UL Black Friday special
RobB replied to Brilongenecker's topic in Kites for Sale, Swap or Trade
Sounds like a really good deal. I am so tempted, but I am trying to save my kite funds for a vented Rev. I have too many kites in the 0-10mph range, but none in the 15+mph range at the moment. Someone jump on this ! -
Congratulations on this score ! Certainly a kite that I'd like to tug on the lines for a while ! Smooth winds to ya, drdemonx !

The Kymera comes with the 'optional' weights all ready installed. They're optional, meaning that you can remove them. (correct me if I'm wrong, JB) I flew my K kite the way it came out of the bag, barely adjusted the bridle after flying it for a few minutes, and haven't touched it since, just flew. If you're having trouble rolling it up, try giving more slack after you give it the input to roll up. Or, maybe you're flying in wind that's too high to roll up easily ?

Any interest in a Trade ? Rev Zen for Xtra Vent ?
RobB replied to RobB's topic in Kites for Sale, Swap or Trade
Oooops... my mailbox was full. I guess you have to empty it every few years,,, -
Greg, which kite are you looking to add weight to ? It's rare that I add weight to a kite, I just fly them the way they're sent to me. Some kites are really resistant to rolling up, and I have added weight to those kites. I just want my kites to be as light as possible, and hopefully fly easier in lighter winds. That's the theory, at least. I will sacrifice some trick-ability for a little more lower end is what I'm saying. My flying beach is covered with these nice, smooth rocks. When I want to experiment with different weights, I just tuck a stone in the tail, fly it, try to figure if I want more or less. When I find the right one, I take it home and find more traditional weights to install permanently.

I get the appeal... it's a good looking kite at a good price. But.... it's also a $120 gamble that it would fly correctly. Or last very long. If only I could have back all the $$$ I spent on inexpensive kites, I would have a few more good ones ! But unfortunately, inexpensive kites aren't worth the time to resell for the small amount that they might bring.

I want to stick with the 1.5s, it's what I'm used to. I'm close to ordering an Extra V new from somewhere... any suggestions ? Colors ? No Color ? -

Hey Mr. L... I do like the colors of your FV... just to verify, is that a FV 1.5b ? I would consider a FV 1.5b at this point since I have nothing to fly when the wind is over 15mph, and I've been left grounded too many times recently. Getting desperate... PM me a price if that is a 1.5b. Thanks ! -
I'm glad to hear you got some time in the air after reading about your frustrations with the K-kite. Once it's repaired and you actually do get some time on the lines with it, I'm sure you will like that one just as much, if not more. Yes, light wind flying does keep you warm... I frequently break a sweat flying in the winter here in the NorthEast, I have flown on snow here in February in shirtsleeves !
