  1. Dussehra is the festival celebrated to rejoice the victory of good over evil. Legend has it that the Prince of Ayodhya Lord Rama killed the King of Lanka Ravana on this eve several centuries ago. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Mysore where the festival becomes a ten-day long celebration, in comparison to the other parts of the country where it is celebrated only for a single day. The celebrations begin on the first day of the Navratri and continue on until the day of Vijaydashmi, which is otherwise known as Dussehra in India. Every year, the Mysore Palace is lit up with a host of different lights, and the tradition has continued on for centuries now. Since the rule of the Vijaynagar Kings in the 15th century, many athletic competitions have been conducted to celebrate the festival, along with other indulgences like singing and dancing. A wrestling bout also takes place, and people from all over the country come to take part in it. The Connection of Mysore Dussehra and Kite Flying Another charm of the Dussehra celebrated in Mysore includes the kite flying competition which was introduced as a way to bring back the spotlight on the dying tradition. It was seen that folks in the cities were averting from flying the kites while in the rural areas it was still quite popular. As a result, the festival was integrated with the competition by arranging a challenging friendly match to see who makes the best kites and flies them. This was organized by the tourism board of Mysore. Fly360, being a pioneer in designer kites and kite flying, played its role as consultant and helped the tourism board in conducting and managing the kite festival end to end. What’s Unique about the Kites in Mysore Dussehra The thing that sets the kites flown here apart is that they are all lit up with small LED lights and are flown at night. Every year, on the occasion, people gather and participate in the flying of kites of all sizes, shapes, and colors, in the hopes to win the grand prize which is set aside for the champion. Even though the activity was added quite late to the celebrations of the festival, it has gained popularity, bringing in national and international tourists alike. The festivities for the celebrations of Dussehra in Mysore started about half a millenia ago when the Vijaynagar Kings ruled the province. However, the celebrations were not quite like what they are today. The spirit of the festival was once purely religious and focused on the art and culture in an effort to preserve the traditions in the Hindu culture. Kite Flying and the Royal Connection The festival gained royal patronage under the rule of the Vijaynagar Kings due to their patronizing of the art, architecture, culture, music, and dance. Even after the Wadiyars of Mysore declared their independence from the state, the festival was preserved and given an additional royal treatment. The royal family also had a liking towards kite flying. This is why the tourism board received complete support from the royal family for the event. Schedule of the Kite Flying Event During Mysore Dussehra In the ten days that the festival is celebrated, the kite flying festival is focused on only during two days of the festival. The night sky is quite mesmerizing to look at with all the glowing kites streaming through the otherwise dark background. Since the younger generation has been lacking the interest in the flying of the kites, the festival is a great way to bring the sport to the frontlines. The children are worshipped during the days that the kites are flown and the people who are masters at flying the kites hand out tips to them so that they can learn about the ancient sport. During the two days, the kites are flown from 10 am to 5 pm during the day and then a special occasion is held for the night-time flying as well. The whole arrangement is made to indulge the local flyers as well as the people who come from afar. The only condition that is enforced in the competition is that each of the kites that are entered into the competition should be made by the flyers themselves and must be able to fly. The state organizes the competition and there are prizes for the winners as well. The first, second, and third prizes roughly come in at INR 15 thousand, INR 10 thousand, and INR 5 thousand, respectively. Consolation prizes are also handed out for those who performed well but could not secure a position. There are many other places in India which celebrate the festivals by organizing fun events such as kite flying. These include the celebration of the Utarayan in Ahmedabad with the International Kite Festival, the celebration of Basant Panchmi in Northern India with kite flying, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Independence Day in New Delhi, and other states like Goa and West Bengal as well. The Kite Connection: Fly360 and the Mysore Dussehra Kite Festival Ever since its conception in 1993, Fly360 has provided enthusiasts with designer kites which are handmade and handcrafted by experts. The trend for the designer kites in India was started by the company and till date, it continues to provide services and products for the various kite festivals which take place in the country. Fly360 played a pivotal role in being a consultant to the Kite flying event held during Mysore Dussehra, due to the great response from all quarters, the event is also going to be held this year during September 29th and 30th. The schedule for this year’s kite festival in Mysore has not yet been announced and the state tourism board promises to do so at the earliest in October. With less than a month left for the celebrations to start, the registrations for the competitions are to begin soon and the glory to the winner ensures that the people will participate in it, fueled with energy and enthusiasm.

  2. I assume the sport kite is a two line delta kite for tricks and/or precision? Do you know the model and brand of this kite? What do you find frustrating and which tricks (if that is what you are aiming for) are closest to be within reach? AND Welcome here @Gladders!! Ahh, I saw from https://kitelife.com/forum/topic/9281-kite-buying-tips/ that that you have an HQ Limbo kite. Also saw from that topic that crash avoidance and stall/tricks practice was a thing. I think that you should not wait for a new kite to learn - use the time until you get one. Wait for a day of low wind (which should be beneficial for the survival of your kite) and you can practice stalls and powering the kite on and off which also is useful when giving to the kite before a crash. A kite in the non-powered "falling leaf" mode will not break on impact with the ground. To get free from the idea (and learn you hands to do it as well) that the kite must constantly rush forward do "barely flying": start the kite, let it reach about 40cm and let it sink back (nose still pointing upwards). Repeat with 80cm, 1.60m etc... Try to hold it a few seconds (yes, this would be a stall) at the "highest" point. Then start and fly to the top of the wind window (backing might be required), turn so that the nose points downwards. Walk towards the kite and try to gain ground (moving downwinds) while the kite is going downwards. Landing normally is now an option. Another way is to extend your arms just above the ground (fight the urge to pull the lines to steer away from the ground!) to do a belly landing. It should not be destructive even if the belly landing fails since you are extending your arms (that is moving them from you - not keeping the arms extended). Then try launching from the belly landed position by a quick tug on one of the lines. Good luck!!

  3. OMG that looks like so much fun.Get to finally meet up with some buggy people this Sunday in Denver CO.Forecast is for 31 degrees so I'm hoping the cold doesn't cancel the fly. I got warm clothes and that to me is better than 100 degrees. They've flown with Tami Frazer who set a speed record at 58.8 mph on a buggy. I got a daughter that's got enough nerve to learn to do that. Don't know if I could cowboy up enough to get to 30 mph LOL. Sure want to try though.

  4. It's all fun, even messing with the twisted lines. If you watch JB's tutorial on line management - you should never have really twisted lines again. Maybe a few small twists here or there, but nothing major. Watch that tutorial til your sick of it - then watch it some more! Once you develop that system and get it successfully - NEVER DEVIATE! Do it the same way over and over - a habit!! Never let someone else wind your lines - if they are a mess, it's all on you that way!

  5. My Tekken sul is rated 2 to 12, Zephyr 1 to 18. The Tekken handles gusty winds a lot better. I've flown it in 15 with no shake. Z I usually don't go over 12 anymore. Z feels very methodical to me. Almost plodding at times. The Tekken is more snappy and I can control the speed better. I broke the Zs LE trying a comete not realizing I had the line wrapped tight around the kite.Yanked trying to get out of the spin like on a insane and snap.Did that to 2 other kites till I figured it out. The LEs were broke trying tip drag to cartwheel. Did that to 3 other kites.Should have stuck to learning that trick on the Addiction and Black Dog. They have carbon rods.I'm at the point now where I don't try the trick intentionally. Doing a low pass if the setup appears I'll try it.Sure is a cool trick. Not breaking things as often now. As I get better I'll be able to do it more on purpose. Both kites came from the GWTW forum. Tekken well flown and taken care of.Z from a guy telling me about a sale and I got the kite new. They fly very different so it's easy for me to justify having both. I don't know about the quad thing in the higher winds. My thoughts always turn to a Vicki or thonged quad. I do know I have a blast between 20 and 25 on my Mind Trick vented.HONEST it will trick in those winds.Last week in 20 plus just left of center doing flic flacs nose dived so hard US and both LS popped out. The soft connectors on that kite can be a pain at times. When doing poor moves like that though they save the day. Got that kite 2nd hand here. Without the forums doubt I'd have any of the 3 yet. They're not cheap and rightly so. After my next Sky Burner I'll get a Benson. Benson Super Fly ul for sale at GWTW as of yesterday. I'm kite poor right now and my trade offer wasn't what the seller was looking for or I'd have it.

  6. Thanks @Breezin, TBH i fancy a change from HQ. I saw an interesting deal on an Elliot kite earlier but I can't find much about them. I had a look at the freilein kites too but I didnt find the website very friendly. Unless I order from Europe, the choices here seem to be either fairly mainstream HQ/Prism/CIM kites or super-boutique high end ones. And anyway, now I've read a bit on here, I'm wondering about a Rev. 😁

  8. Patience, persistence, precision. Ingraining the 3 p's has made my practice, practice, practice a lot more rewarding. Bought a sport kite for rehab and it has become much, much more. Kite junky should be a song title. After much contemplation the sound of one hand clapping is whoosh. I think 😕.Could be wrong though. Guess I'll have to think on it some more 🤔.

  9. Not sure what access you have to Premier but after much research my 1st kite was a Widow ng. I've looked at the Limbo a lot as a higher wind kite. As you get better I think that kite will teach you a lot in 20 plus winds. If you're going to stay with Prism the Hypnotist would probably be better. Limbo will take you thru the nose dive tricks that the Quantum excels at surviving. Kite World in the UK has the HQ Maestro 3 for 104.00 pounds.Going up in price the Zebra is top of the line.Pretty good reviews on both kites. Lots of people love the HQ Shadow. My HQ Delta Hawk is well built and I'll have it as long as I can fly the dang thing. It's named Wicked. Look at some of the cheaper Level 1 models and the Silver Fox line. For your skill set and where you live I think the Maestro 3 is a good choice. When getting my 1st kite it was #4 on my list behind Wolf ng, Widow ng, Hypnotist.Flying Wings Fox 2.5 #5 in that order. A lot more tricky than the Jive or Quantum so I've read. Widow was #2 because of cost. Most of the info I got on the Maestro came from UK fliers on GWTW and Fractured Axle. You can follow how it evolved from 1,2 and 3. The mods folks have done is good reading also. Not a lot of Freilein duels in the U.S. that I can tell except the OSK line. Outside the U.S. people seem pretty happy with them for the price. Mostly from China sellers.Got a great deal on a Mind Trick vented or I would have gotten the Freilein Challenger max from OSK.

  10. I started thinking about making the six-hour drive from Austin, then remembered I've already got a scheduled kite flying on Saturday. That's a first. I hope the octopuses / octopodes survive with all their limbs, this weekend's weather is forecast to be rather active.

  11. I have to take the wind I get if I want to fly. But, right now, the best thing I have going for my quad flying evolution is my wife and son in law who windmill my sail for me when I go down. It's all fun, even messing with the twisted lines.

  12. There are plenty more things you can learn. For strong winds you learn the cost of spars after they break, how to patch a torn sail, and how to cut down a snapped line into short lines. You also learn the "fire drill" maneuver to rush to the edge of the wind window in heavy gusts, and the importance of stretch strips sewn into the kite fabric to slow down the eventual wear. For light/variable winds you can learn patience, learn how to read the tells of an incoming wind by watching the distance, and get the exercise of the "walk of shame" out to the kite as it repeatedly falls (or learn about "magic sticks").

  14. Assemble each travel frame "stick" with a couple of wraps of electrical tape, so the pieces stay together, until you don't want them to,.... A travel frame is stiffer. than a regular tubed set, so a three wrap travel is very much like 4 wraps. you can vary the stiffness to suit personal preferences. I like 4 diamonds and two green race, with the race members at the junction of the leading edge and the top of the down spar. I need that area rigid and I want the outer 3rds and the center portions of the leading edge to be more flexible. YMMV

  15. Riff, are you addicted to lñkite seeing? Three posts ago (1 day) you said you were putting it away for the weekend ....and yet now you have done major work on it. With as often as you are working on all of them all I am starting to worry about you my friend. Said with a smile and knowing how you don't do anything just occasionally or halfway. 17. I think that it likely every form of meditation, activity based or traditional meditation, is likely not always smooth and meditatively rewarding in the learning curve phase. 18. I decided to stitch with white.. If the Purple will act a bit as a black light it might pop at night.. I can also try to find some Blacklight LEDs. Either way, I think the white offsets it pretty well. LE will also be white. Edge Binding (and wear strips) will be orange. The sewing on the panel is complete.. LE is made.. Time to marry the two and start finishing up this project.

  19. I guess my question is - is there a "hole" in your quiver of kites that you want to fill? Low end? Middle? Personally not really into high winds here. Rather go quad if the winds are up. A low wind Prism would be the Ozone. Flies when most stuff is grounded. Not a "trick monster" and takes a light hand, but flew in winds my friend's Qpro sul didn't handle. But again, not a trick monster. The only other Prism I have really flown was the Alien. Odd little kite with a bent LE. I tend to fly it in slightly higher winds as the design seems to pull less. But again if the winds are up - I grab a vented quad. Both are no longer in production and there seems to be a cult of Prism owners that buy almost anything Prism. So keeping your eye on forums like GWTW is key - and having cash at the ready! I've seen kites posted for sale that go in minutes!!!
