  1. Aye, our number has dropped a little more but I'm pretty sure our head count has stabilized and I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend! 10am sharp start at Bolstad, 6 ft rule (distancing and observing wind direction), be conscious about handling other people's stuff, and wash your hands (requisite PSA). Since everyone has done a clinic (or more) with me in the past, we'll do our Quad 101 as an overview of topics and more specific lines of questioning based on personal interest. Of course, one on one coaching as desired, and what I'm guessing will be a very good share of team flying... Small familiar group, we'll make the most of it, smartly. My cell is 503-890-0280, text message works best. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who had to cancel, for allowing me to apply your fee as a credit toward future events.🙏🏻
  2. A few people have elected to cancel their trip, especially those dealing with airports and borders - so far I'm still planning to be there to enjoy the beach and chat about kites with those of you who make it.
  3. Alas, my bag (42" long and wheeled) is from an era when shorter wakeboards were popular - now the equivalent bags are usually upwards of 50" which leaves a floppy portion if you're packing a normal quad bag. Looks very similar, but I didn't see any measurements?

  7. I'm no master kite BUILDER, but my Pfaff 1222e (and 1222) both serve me well - mostly metal parts.
  8. We're pleased to yet again announce the next prize being given away to our most appreciated supporters, the Kitelife Subscribers... For roughly 10 cents per day they play a major role in keeping KL growing in every way. Over 21 FEET (by 58" usable width) of a special DYE SUBLIMATION RIPSTOP from Premier Kites, single piece - unknown value! Per Premier's website: "With recent improvements to the sublimation printing process, Premier feels confident offering printed kites .... The key to a quality printed kite is the use of color and to offering detail. Besides our graphics department is quite gifted with the color." NOTE: The only way you can usually get this stuff is in raffles, auction or drawings like this - its never been sold retail as far as I know and makes a colorful fabric for any kite build! You can sign up here. Odds of winning for this prize is currently 1/412, and will be drawn on Apr 1st, 2020! Our thanks, and the very best to you... Let the drooling begin!

  10. Far less pressure really, with a fun, team savvy group around you.
  11. 7 signed up, 5 spots left - we'll also have at least THREE members of Team KiteLife involved in the team exercises.
  12. I met Francis Rogallo at the Kitty Hawk Festival in 1996 (I believe), helluva mind and the fore father of pretty much every dual line kite and hang glider on earth. Good luck in your search. 👍🏻

  15. 3 spots gone, and a good team foundation already!
  16. Maybe... 😇 Pretty awesome doing a snap lazy into your own hands, tip stab either side of you, etc... I've even managed one JL, some backspins, etc.
  17. Join us for two full days of in-depth roundtable quad instruction for all skill levels with 31-time US champion John Barresi at the Bolstad Beach Approach in Long Beach WA on March 21-22, 2020... This is the workshop for folks who want to build up their solo skills and the very basics of team flying! We'll be covering everything from absolute basics (pure beginner) all the way up through advanced techniques and team flying, as well as identifying short flight routines that are sure to help your skills along while having fun at the same time. Saturday morning is always a group presentation, full 101 on the ins and outs of quad kites, equipment and related theory, this covers a metric ton of stuff that even the "pros" think they know, but often don't... From there, we usually go through the fundamentals of clean launching, landing and control methods... Students then break up onto their own kites to work on the "homework" (maneuver combinations) that I'll distribute beforehand, during which instructor(s) will make the rounds between each flier, offering supporting instruction, as well as addressing individual interests. Sunday is the same without a 101 presentation, followed by a couple hours (or more) of team skills introduction to close out the day. Students will use their own kites, any line length will work (80'-90' is very common) but 120' length will be required for team exercises. Must be spectra or Skybond lines for team flying. Testimonials - http://tinyurl.com/jb-testimonials == Registration is $150 per person and includes full access to the clinic on both days (10a-4p), discounted to $125 for KiteLife subscribers. Clinic sign up here - https://kitelife.com/forum/store/product/103-2020-northwest-quad-clinic-mar-21-22-2020/ == Please note, there are only 12 spots available and it can sometimes fill up very quickly. == Signed up so far: @Russ Wilson Jennilyn W. @handymanrae @bowtie TBA TBA TBA TBA TBA TBA TBA TBA
  18. Never on a dogstake, but it's happened during catch and throw during turbulent wind when the kite jumps a bit on the way down causing a miss with the hand and a catch with the forehead or grill.
  19. I also use a "plus/minus" approach, having trained extensively and consciously to understand what it feels like (and how) to add or remove 3, 5, 10, 20 mph to my apparent wind with arm and body movement, all for various tasks and intensity.
  20. Yeah, no meters for me. Don't trim all your ear hair and stand in the wind for 30 years - my ear fuzz, skin temperature (sides) and other senses generally give me within 2-3mph accuracy in judging wind speed. But I also don't look at wind the same way - for me, it's like the sensation of being in a tub of water - you can feel it's 360 movement, fluid, somewhat mercurial, breathing hot and cold, changing it's mind, and different ribbons of air at various altitudes... It's all quite enchanting. ❤️
