    Turtling 🐢

Thanks, I figured it what a dual line term. I sat and tried to imagine what it could refer to for kites and kept seeing the ALS sign for turtle in my head that was not helping. It IS my favorite sign language word (of myaybe 10 word vocabulary Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app

Oh boy! A new term I don't know and have yet to be able to imagine what it could possibly refer to! Awesome! Ah, what is turtling?? Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app
  3. I would add that planning on doing a practice wing is helpful. That first wing will teach you things about handling your machine and materials. Kite fabric is not forgiving at all of uneaven tension or less than smooth moments feeding it into the machine. It also keets needle holes permanently as a record of errors. . If you skip the practice wing you will likely find that your first kite is noticably asymmetrical from errors. I did some scrap practice before my first wing, but the size and weight of the first wing changes things and it too three wings of work to make a 2 wing kite. Also, kites involve a lot of long straight sewing so check your bobbin fill more often than normal. It is easy to crank out distance faster on kites than other projects that are curvier. 5. I personally can't answer your question, but someone will chime in with a good dual line answer. I just wanted to say "Welcome, I am glad you are here." It is so fun to see folks from around the world with similar interests. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app

  7. Edmond brings up a practice I do too...the visual defining of the space you are using as people approach. However you need to have good control. When I started out liked to have a marker at each end of my flight field so I could better gauge depth and where they were relative to my kite. In addition to low passes I have found that purposely doing a dive to a gentleman ground bounce can be useful in making kids who are running in my direction reconsider just how close they want to come and if they really do want to chase the kite. It also helps parents consider just how much they want to control/guide thier offspring. But knowing you have reliable control is key anywhere. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app
  8. Welcome to the dark side. I enjoyed quite a smile reading your post, it is fun to see others bitten by the bug. Make time to fly with others as they will mentor you along when you need it and enjoy watching you smile too. I know what you mean about not knowing who you are talking too....the kite evens are such a mix of folk and everyone seems to just assume that everyone else knows everyone. It can be hard to know how to connect into the fun at times, but it sounds like you were not shy and did quite well. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app
  9. I find that people go to areas that are easy to access. Most beach areas will have a spot that it too far for most people to bother walking too and that can be your zone, but you may have to look for it. If that is not true of where you are then pick a time of day that is not popular to fly so that you minimize the wanderers. I agree with the stay away from people until you can land or hold it where you want it reliably. Also, when you find someone wanders close keep breathing and fly the kite. Dividing your brain to watch them will end up making your flight more erratic and become more likely that you will imagine and subconsciously create a bad senario. Breath and hum a happy song to yourself as you imagine what you WANT not what you don't want. Jedi mind focus seems to work well on kites. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app

  13. Riff, are you addicted to lñkite seeing? Three posts ago (1 day) you said you were putting it away for the weekend ....and yet now you have done major work on it. With as often as you are working on all of them all I am starting to worry about you my friend. Said with a smile and knowing how you don't do anything just occasionally or halfway. 14. I think that it likely every form of meditation, activity based or traditional meditation, is likely not always smooth and meditatively rewarding in the learning curve phase. You were right, practice practice practice. Good luck. (What IS the sound of one hand clapping??) Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app

  18. Hey all, I am headed to Ocean City MD on Sept 19-20 if anyone is around to fly quads. I know, I know the real fun starts Friday, but I only get Wednesday and Thursday. Anywho, if you are around and want to fly I'll be flying as often as my kids allow. Am aiming to do a night fly after they go to bed. Hope to see someone sometime.... 19. Stay safe down there. Thinking of the Shooks and all my OBX favorite places. Looking like Maryland is gonna get a pass this time. However, my crazy friends are thinking about flying in possibly heavy rain on Friday. We don't get full vent wind inland often enough to pass it up. Can you say rain gear? 20. Don't be shy with the quad line pilots, they are the most generous and patient crew of people I have ever met. Learning from someone is the way to go, Andy a first try on thier kite is perfectly fine (they are harder to break than you would think!). If you have folks nearby the drive to go fly with them is seriously worth the effort. Note for the wise though, kite folk sometime can be oblivious to anyone on the ground who doesn't talk to them first. It can feel to an introvert that they are being unwelcoming, but they are just not aware that you are looking for a welcome. Walking up to them and being clear "I am new, I love what you are doing and I want to learn, how do I do that?" can save you time and frustration. Remember, we are used to others walking around us watching but never talking to us about this clearly most fascinating hobby- so be outgoing and clear about your interest and what you hope to learn. I have been flying long enough now to start to keep up with team flying and I still make it a habit to say to pilots I am just meeting "hey, what tricks can ya show me?" Or "I have been working on_____ do you know how to do it?" Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app
  21. If I did the math right your line of kites is 180' long, which would (given a perfect of the arch, not real world conditions) put the high spot of the arch (radius) at 57' high. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using KiteLife mobile app
  22. Beautiful work. Clearly a labor of love. I know nothing about single lines, but could they be used as a kite arch? As an arch all of the art would be closer to the ground for viewing/ enjoying?? It is so much fun to see beautiful work with that attention too detail. First look!

Ok, does anyone else find themselves feeling like the kite forge logo in the belly is a smidge off center? I am sure it is a just because the logo is not symetrical and that it is indeed centered. I just keep feeling it over and over again in images like a loose thread I wanna snip so it looks perfect.
