Recommendations for low wind Int/Adv Stunt Kite

Great information in this post. As we discussed in PM... This discussion seems to parallel pretty well. I read the reference to the ATM S UL needing more wind than the Zephyr. There must be something wrong with the adjustments on that, as Lam makes the best SUL trick kites that I've flown. I forgot to mention the ATM, as I have no experience with them. If you can't get it to fly in 2-5mph winds... Contact Lam. Something's not right. -
Hey, WOW ! Thanks Kitelife !!! What a great early start to Kite Season ! I would buy the lifetime membership up front, but I've got 3 kids that spend most of my 'kite money' at the moment. I'll be here on the year to year basis for now, but I will always be here. To me, Kitelife is more important than the AKA, it brings people together from all over the world to enable the Kite Addiction. Any of you who are geographically isolated from the kiting hotspots know what I mean. Do I trash talk ? I thought I was more in the ooo and ahhh crowd when it came to drawings.... all right, sometimes I kid about the prize flying to the east coast. I'm hoping that one of my kids will join me in pairs (or pairs together), flying the old green Kymera & the new Blue side by side. The bigger two kids are 7&8 now, they can both fly a two line foil, so I'm hoping that their skills will explode in the coming year and they'll be ready to fly a more serious kite. * Happy Dance *

That MEFM is to die for ! Beautiful colors. Is the MEFM one of the originals, or one that was made in Australia ?

WOW... I learned something here, too. Very similar to the kite stack that I flew a few years ago. A kite friend that I met at the beach threw it out on the line and handed it to me. I was very impressed with the pull, and how high of an angle that it flew. Now, this kite friend... many years ago she was president (?leader?) of the KTAI, and she had access to all kinds of kites that most of us don't see. I think that this kite that you have is an amazing part of kite history, don't let it go, you'll probably never find another. -
It kinda looks like a Triangulation, if it flies like it looks in the picture. The Triangulation is all attached to itself, so it looks like a stack, but not separated by lines. I've seen different versions of the Triangulation, some big with many wings, some with only 3 wings, and another with progressively larger wings. I flew a large (7 wings, I think) Triangulation. and it pulled like a mule. A quick google search reveals that it's a Joel Schultz design.

I guess flying side by side with Revs will be the big question... that's the one shortcoming in my mind of the ABS... what if I ever got the chance to fly side by side with another who was flying a Rev, and I had an ABS ? It looks like the Phoenix has more in common with a Rev, and will probably fly very similar. The Phoenix has certainly caught my eye... Wish I could go back to the days that I bought a new kite every month, with all these new kites out there that I need to fly ! Oh, and to have the time to fly them, too !

Looks like the 4 line kite that we'll all be flying in a year or two. I think one might be flying to the NorthEast for kite season... I'm torn on the XtraVent or XtraMegaSuperVent... or whatever they're being called.

Usually means a new item that is old. Never used... and probably discontinued, as in the case of the E2. I've heard it used mostly in the automotive world, like if you were looking for a grill for your '66 Mustang... the holy grail would be to find a NOS grill, stashed away in an old Ford dealer's parts department in Kansas. Nice offerings, the E2 would be ideal for someone starting out, but past the nose-plant stage. It has a good wind range, but I wouldn't think of flying an E2 in winds much over 15mph. It can be flown in pretty low winds, though. -

I hope your repair is standing the test of time. I have attempted spar repairs in the past, only while waiting on replacements. Never had one fail, but I only flew on the repairs once or twice before the new ones came in. Please don't get me wrong, I respect your effort. I will say... I've had spars fail and the pieces ripped the sail. Really, nothing worse than that... without replacing a panel, there's no way to fix a sail and make it like new... you can always tell, and if it's a special kite, it's heartbreaking. Best of winds to you ! -
Sounds good to me... from what I've seen, no one is in the Kite industry to get rich. My dream business model would be a mobile kite store, parked at a beach somewhere, and flying with my customers all day. Hey, a guy can dream, right ?

Short lines are the key... The 50' lines that come with the 4d are too long for zero wind...

The 4d will definitely train you to temper your inputs. I fly mine on 30' lines, it will fly in absolute zero wind, and it flies almost as fast as a Micron in any wind over 5mph. I'm in... My son has taken possession of my red 4d, it might be fun to try to fly pairs with him.

I wouldn't try this on the Illusion. When assembled, the Illusion has a lot of stress at the center T because of the curvature of the kite when assembled. The Illusion had special, specific lower spreaders that were reinforced at the junction point, they are exclusive to the Illusion. The problem with trying to repair a spar on a kite is that if the repair fails, there is the risk that a broken spar will puncture the sail. -

I started with the gopro by just hanging it from a single line, attached to the flying line with a carabiner. Just open the carabiner and wrap the flying line around it 3 or 4 times, and then let the line out to the desired height. 1 out of 10 shots turned out ok with that method, but once I switched to the picavet, my success rate increased to maybe 4 out of 10 good shots. Video was another story, you really need to get a gimble mount to eliminate the sway of the camera. If you click on my utoob link, look for a video called VAP ? To see the poor results that I got trying the video on the gopro. Check out Brooxes KAP website for lots of information, and any KAP supplies you might need. There are also some other KAP'rs here that can help answer some of your questions better than me...

I think you can get a small sled kite (maybe called 'pocket kite' ?) for very little $$$. I do find that the smaller the kite, the less stable it is, and then to add a swinging load to it ? I use a Power Sled 24 and an Ultrafoil 15 for most of my KAP. I've also been using a GoPro with a simple Picavet mount. The GoPro rig is small & light, and could probably be lifted by kites much smaller than what I use. All of my KAP equipment fits in a small backpack. That includes the 2 kites, 500' of 300# line on a windbreaker winder, a sand anchor, trucker's gloves, KAP rig, and a leash to tie off to immobile objects. The backpack is always in my car, ready to go when I get the urge to fly. You'll have to experiment with your idea of going small, but keep in mind that build tolerances become more critical the smaller you go... one mm off, and a little kite won't fly right...

I actually have a kite-themed polo shirt that was given to me as a gift. I got to wear it last year when I attended a dinner that was part of the LBI kite festival. It was actually kinda nice to have appropriate attire... but it was only the second or third time I had worn the shirt in years of occupying space in my drawer.

I was reading through the information that's available, and read that framing is a choice of Skyshark, Rev rods, or no frame. I wonder what the equivalent Skyshark is to a Green Race rod ?

I'm eager to hear some details about the Phoenix Pros as well. Especially the differences when framed with Skyshark vs. Rev sticks. The bottom vent idea is interesting, too. I am mostly interested in the variations that are comfortable in 20+mph winds, but also see the day coming that I'll also have to replace my existing 1.5b sails...

You said in a later post that you plan to use your iPhone to film your progress... your iPhone is your QR code scanner. Sorry to hear about the polo shirt vs. the T shirt. I would almost join this goofy club 38 thing for a new kite T shirt, but a kite polo shirt would be useless to me.

Looks like a 'Spirit'... Is that an original, or a New Tech? That was my first quad, too, but I had the NTK version.
