Prawnstar
So we talked about flying with music the other week. Tell me, whats your choice of headphones and why? In ear? Over head? Brand?
John Barresi
I used to have Beats and all sorts of high end headphones, ear buds and over ear buds, but they kept breaking or dying in weather. The new iPhone headphones have been working pretty well for me, or over ear Sony cheapies.
SparkieRob
I've been through a few different types and styles but I keep going back to the ones with my iPhone. Mainly as they are always handy and sound pretty good. I'm going to try out a set of Bluetooth ones to see how it goes without the cord. John Barresi
I almost went bluetooth, but I'm just HORRIBLE at remembering to put stuff on a charger, except my phone.
SparkieRob
Pity they can't be wind powered! ...or solar.
mystainedskin
I agree with the cheap Sony buds.(under 20 bucks) You can find seperate buds for the ear that suit you. I use some foam ones from an old blue tooth set. They are like safety ear plugs...squeeze,insert,expand. I have never had any luck with Bluetooth sets, they dont like moisture...and with 100degree weather and humidity to match...they just don't last. Cyphert
I have some super nice head phone option as I run a recording studio. I really liked my in ear with memory foam they blocked the wind and sounded great. But I switched to over ear closed studio head phones. They block all outside noise and really help you get into the zone. But the main reason I switched to over ear is that when I'm on the beach in the wind I was getting ear aches from the wind. That and my ears got cold. I have a set of both in ear and on ear head phones always ready to go. But I almost always stick with the over ear. And as far as quality there is a huge difference from the cheapies to the pricier studio ones i like. You normally won't notice the difference unless you try the pricy ones.Over ear closed studio headphones: KRK KNS'sIn ear with aftermarket memory foam: Klipsch image s4There are cheaper and also much more expensive ones out there i have tried dozens and these 2 fit me the best. A good pair of headphones is almost as important as a the kite
Wayne Dowler
I prefer behind the neck Sennheiser (sp) phones! I got tired of always having a dangling earbud get wound into my winder as I put my gear away!! Behind the neck solved that and always easy to remove for conversation with onlookers! Good sound quality!! I almost always wear a wide brimmed hat, over the head just doesn't work with that!!
TAKAKO
Hi all!I lost mine, but my fav is this one!Audio Technica ATH EC700SV Earbuds - SilverSometimes I run for 360 and they stay in. And nice sound. So, I need this, JB?
SkyPuppets LimitVoodoo
I also like the Image S4s.My goto pair lately has been Monster iSport Immersion. In the ear design, waterproof, never falls out while flying. Sounds good, just shy of great.I too like the over the ear headphones but mine would never stay on while flying... Not the way I fly lol.
John Barresi
My ears tend to "chew" while I fly, so most stick-in ear buds fall out on me... iPhone is the only one that I don't have much of a problem with.
Cyphert
the comply tx-500 isolation plus earphone tips keep the earbuds in place. they are like foam earplugs that just sit in your ear new chewing no sliding out. i tuck the cord into my jacket and i put my iphone into an inner jacket and im good all day. the iphones are nice but for me they tend to slide out of my left ear. foam are the only ones that i have found that really hold in your ear. not the little foam pads but the after market memory foam that expands to fit and hold in your ear. if they fall out or move its not the earbuds fault and they make them for almost every brand inner ear head phone. Prawnstar
i currently have a set of soul in ear, but dont like the fit with the silicone tips, they stay in but arent comfortable. Have ordered some memory foam tips to see how they go. Am contemplating some overhead phones but not quite sure which ones are going to do the job at this point.... Cyphert
the foam is night for listing to music at night as well. because you can sleep on them. if its the right ear bud that doesnt stick out.
Reef Runner
Am contemplating some overhead phones but not quite sure which ones are going to do the job at this point.... I know that these aren't the most expensive, studio grade headphones, but for a great pair of over-the-head, noise canceling headphones, I have had great results with my JVC HA-NC250 set (iPod & iPhone compatible). These headphones are quite comfortable, light weight, adjustable, and can be used with, or without the noise canceling feature, turned on (I hardly ever turn it on). They come with a great hard-shell travel case, which holds the headphones, cables, and extra batteries, along with plenty of extra room for your iPod, etc. When I travel, I carry my main iPod (Nano 5th gen), as well as a smaller iPod Shuffle, along with a couple of pairs of ear buds, in the hard case, along with the headphones & cables. The best thing is, that although this unit list for around $200 (and you can pay that), if you do a bit of shopping around, on-line, you can snag one on Amazon, or from some of the other electronics stores, for just under $100. This made it a lot easier to try, plus the Cnet reviews, weren't half bad. Definitely worth a try, if you don't want to spend $300+ on a pair of headphones. Oh, and as for travel, the unit comes with a plug that can be used when flying, and there is also a plug that steps the mini plug up to a standard 1/4" plug, for home system use. I have been very well pleased (was originally contemplating Dr Dre's, but didn't like the idea that they didn't work, should the battery's run out) with mine, and have never regretted this purchase. Cyphert
The biggest thing with head phones is the feel on your ears. My producer uses a set of akg headphones and just loves em. I can't stand em. They probably sound good but don't fit my head or ears. Buying headphones in a store is much better then online just cuz we all have different heads and flying kites last thing you want is uncomfortable things wobbling on your head. I can't stand em. They probably sound good but don't fit my head or ears. Buying headphones in a store is much better then online just cuz we all have different heads and flying kites last thing you want is uncomfortable things wobbling on your head. Good advice for sure, Matt, however, the JVC HA-NC250 set, really wasn't aimed at the studio "professional", such as yourself, who may very well be wearing them all day. These phones don't actually enclose the entire ear (tight against the head), but rather, gently cup the outer surface of the ear. Also, being very adjustable, I can actually wear them, either directly on my head, or over top of a cap, along with my Oakleys, and they still fit perfectly, either way (I prefer them over my cap). There is very little pressure exerted against the outer ear, making them great, for several, several hours of comfortable wear (probably longer). They are so light, that you hardly even know you have them on. I probably wouldn't recommend them for running, or any other extremely active sports, but for an afternoon of kite flying, or just listening to your tunes while on the go, it's pretty hard to go wrong with the JVC's, especially for the price. Again, they are designed, somewhat generically, so as to please the general population, but then again, so are the popular Bose & Dre's, which will hit you for 3 - 4 big ones. I did examine some of those other brands, but I found the JVC HA-NC250's to be much lighter, more adjustable, and most importantly, much more comfortable, and they definitely won't break the bank. And yes, I then ordered them on-line (Amazon.com), simply because they were about $75 cheaper, than in the store. The zippered hard case was also a nice bonus, so when it's time to pack up gear for an afternoon at the kite field, they can be chunked into the trunk, or into the bottom of the kite bag, without any fear of damage. Again, probably not the headphone for the studio pro, but not bad at all, for a "rookie" kiter NOTE: We had another topic, sometime back, concerning the use of ear phones/buds/plugs, etc, and the dangers associated with blocking out all outside noise. I think we all agreed, that this may indeed, not be the best idea, or the safest thing to do, especially when flying alone, unless we are in a protected area, that we know well. One should always be in touch with their surroundings, and remain aware of what is going on around them, because, #1 - your attention is usually fixed on your kite, and #2 - you surely need to be able to hear, if someone, or something, is approaching (sneaking up) from your back side. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS !!
Cyphert
The KRK-KNS8400 are 139 on amazon i picked em up at a local store fore 150. i do buy most everything on amazon though. the bose are very nice but the dr dre are not very good the sound is very fake and artificially enhanced. one of the headphones in the studio is a set of Sure headphones and probably sound better then mine. they do have full around the ear open headphones for singers so they can hear themselves for those that care about there surroundings. i like to get as lont in my kite flying as i can. find that special head space. but i fly on the beach and use my van and kite bags to make a little nest for myself. i also use my cell phone so when im flying with a friend they can just call me thats what me and my friend do as we both prefer closed headphones. most studio pros use much nicer headphones then me but also spend way more starting at 300. i have nice monitor speakers that i use in the studio. my headphones are just for the beach. i do want to find a good pair of blue tooth headphones but i dont think the technology is quite there yet. Reef Runner
Yep, the KRK-KNS8400 looks very nice, and somewhat similar to the JVC HA-NC250's. As you said, I use my headphones, mainly while flying - that is, when I'm in a safe spot, else, I just use an iPod with a cheap-o pair of plugs, loosely inserted, so I can hear my surroundings, along with the tunes. I liked the part, where you mentioned, creating yourself a little nest on the beach. When I'm flying on the beach, I'm usually in a well designated neighborhood, and my wife and friends, are usually sitting around chatting, so no real problems. If I'm off on my own, I'll have to admit, I'm a bit more cautious, and aware of my surroundings. As for the Bluetooth speakers, I have heard that they DO, still have problems, but surely you would know more about that, than I........Let us know if your come up with something, that does the job........... Cyphert
i guess there are some ok blue tooth speaker phone units with noise canceling gismos so i think soon there should be some good options i havent looked into the $500+ units im sure they are ok. i run into cord issues with mine. there are super long cords after market cables dont have the same locking cable into the headphones. i just try to tuck everything into my jacket. summer times i start having troubles as i wear less. i actually dont wear headphones in the summer as much and tend to get ear aches from the wind. Cyphert
the hard case on those jvc are very alluring!! they could live in a kite bag. all mine have big soft bags. another usb headphone problem is charging i dont need another thing to charge i have seen some that live on the charger in the car and are always ready to go. and its a pass though charger so you can use it for other things as well. Yep, they can live almost anywhere. It's a really great case, as cases go. As I mentioned, I carry my big iPod, plus a smaller iPod Shuffle, with ear buds, wires, etc, right in the case with the headphones, with room to spare. But still, the phones are absolutely great.............that's what we were talking about, right ? Oh, and not exactly sure what you were talking about - usb & charging, etc. There's nothing on the the JVC to charge. Uses a AAA battery, but I rarely turn it on, anyway, so I've never had to change it. That's the nice thing about them, they work, even if the battery is dead, missing, or gone............
