While some flyers were at White Rock, Canada, some at Bend, OR, I was with the California flyers for Morro Bay's first Annual Kite Festival. Wow, I took my long johns off for the first time. (ok to much info) It's that California weather. Saturday was beautiful with just enough wind to get the big kites up. Teddy Bear, Guitar, UFO, gecko, lobsters, catapillars, parafoils, genkis, 252's and more. They do know how to party in the sky. We had Paul Warner, from Canada, Gordon Anderson, Eric Froming and between them and Brian Champie they painted the sky's. We had Airzone kite team from the Bay area. Ron D. and Sharon, Alex our 9th grader who does a wonderful Willy Wonka routine in costume. The city was fantastic and did a great job putting it together with vendors, sound and everything necessary to make a perfect kite festival. Kids kite making and free delta kites were given out too. The kewlest thing of all was the kite parade. People here have tried to have 2 parades and they were rained out, so they wanted to throw a parade. Of course being the crazy kiteflier I am, I wanted to be in it. The rest wanted to be busy on the beach) The powers that be told me to join the kite walker group. It was a group of volunteers walking and carrying kites from Bay Front Kites Ron and I walked back to pick up my gear, since we were one of the first in the parade. Wow! It wasn't just a parade w/kite walkers, it was a KITE parade. Every float, every person, animals, everything had kites on them!! Different colors and shapes. It was great. Best parade I've ever seen besides on the TV. Kites and more KITES! The crowds were great. It had to be more then they expected to come. They sold everything but a couple sweat shirts right away. I flew my cat in the hat routine for the first time outside. There were just about a dozen kids in my skit. The crowd was solid when I looked up. I had high school girls to little kids in costume. Definitely the best Thing 1 and 2 that I've had yet. They practiced causing havoc and belly crashing. Jim S. took some good pictures and will send me a link. There were a few kiteflyers that let me know they would like to be a part of it when we do it again. The feed back was wonderful on my Rev lesson. It would have to be with Ron, Susan and Allen demonstrating for me while I talk. lol Some people have to smile when they see these world class fliers giving a beginning kite lesson. The audience let me know they really liked it. There was some time on Sunday for lessons and even some free fly time. Perfect.... The city loved the event and can't wait to do it bigger and better next year. Just seems like it would be hard to beat. Ahh, I do like CA weather. Next month I'll be back to play in San Ramon and there will be a new festival in Santa Cruz in September. Life is good. Now the grandkids are at my house for a week, so I'll miss the new Portland Comp. Everyone that goes should do their best to have enough fun for me. Oh, and compete and get your credentials. We are going to need more flyers for invitations to events. Seriously, we're going to get more events then we have good flyers. If it's your dream get out there and fly! BB Penny

I agree w/ wind the shorter lines of about 75-80 ft. should be long enough for a beginner. Unless you are in strong wind all the time your lines are going to have a lot of lag at 120 ft. and if you're a new quad flyer chances are you aren't going to be ready to fly team this year. I've never worked w/dyna lines, so I can't say if they are glued on, but I wouldn't think so. It's not hard to sleeve, or adjust sleeves as a general rule. Sounds like Wind can set you up with what you'd need, too. Good luck. BB Penny

I'm about halfway thru video from Arlington. Should be done this weekend and will pass it along for your review and use. Glenn, Any chance you can send him a vdeo of my Arlington "Mystery Waltz". That was so cute. "waltz". I used the floor alot and it was fun. Unless I sent that DVD to John already? I like it better then I like the red/white/blue on short lines. Guess it's good to know though I could fly in small spaces if need be. I saw an old video of me flying on long lines to Whitney Houston songs.. I'm missing long lines now. I'm not sure which stunt you're performing. On some stunts we put wraps in ahead so that it comes out clean. BB Penny

Thank you.. The more kites, the more kids, the more fun kites in kids hands the more fun! Sometimes I miss a cue as I am tying to get a child to scoot out of range of my kite. We've all had a lot of fun with it. Thanks for the video John. BB Penny

There are probably a lot of great Hawaiin Kite memories out there. They were very popular. Heavy, pull and not always slow. Heavy, pulling," the man in the kite store told me. "A lady your size would have to fly a SMALL kite."" And he steered me away from the Kite. I just thoght to myself, "Your wrong, I've got a Rev on order and I'm going to learn to fly it and it's bigger then that!" They only had the Rev I's and it was 9 ft long. Still I think fondly of the Hawaiin's. Bet there are lots of articles and pictures from the past on them too. Good luck in your search. BB Penny ~

Glen and Rachel, I should look for your email. Thank you for the dvd and pics of Lincoln City. Great job. Again, what a learning tool. lol I think we'll have the announcer call a Penny behind the curtain call, so I don't have to run around and look for the players. What a shame I was wearing Tie Dye instead of a matching outfit with the Flag Kite. I think I like that routine on longer line, too. How funny, it's my only chance to see the skit so far. What I am seeing is kids flying UFO's etc. most of the time just enough to keep them going during the skit because they are watching the skit. But they are smiling and laughing. You did a wonderful job capturing the audience. Thank you so much. Yup, now I know I can go short lines ~ I'll have to go longer and play. BB Penny~

The Kids Expo at the Kitsap Pavilion was most excellent. I was the first show of the morning at 11:30. It didn’t open till 10:00 AM but at 9:00 AM they were letting people in all ready. It stayed packed all day long. What a perfect event for kids. They had free rock climbing, bungee jumping in a swing apparatus, stage show’s from dancers, Ronald McDonald, Science Guy, Karate, etc. etc. Row’s and Row’s of booths w/free items and information on everything from Scuba diving to Horseback Riding… and of course Kiteflying! Robert and his assistants seemed a little apprehensive when I told them, I was there for the kids to have hands on experience, so we’d fly between shows below the stage as we had done the previous year with only two kites. This year, they had sent Katie to help me carry in armfuls of kites. You can imagine their thoughts of people running into each other, kites tangling on each other. Well, except for one young lady who ran across the crowded room ignoring safety and kites on the floor and slid on a UFO and shattered it’s spar-we had no incidences. She was ok, and maybe learned a lesson. I spotted large warehouse doors that led outside; they couldn’t be opened, but couldn’t be blocked. Perfect space to park and fly kites. I put up 4 butterfly’s, 3 UFO’s.. and My Rev. Before I even had two butterfly’s up I had a group of girls that showed an interest. They were a dance group out of Gig Harbor, WA. We had plenty of time to round up a Grinch and a few who’s ville towns people. During the skit the girls danced and jumped as they flew their butterfly’s and UFO’s around me like a wagon train. Perfect! Mikela, (sp) and Sara were my Sam I Am and voice at the end. They were so cute and did a wonderful job of making the part their own. The crowd absolutely loved it! The event organizer told me it was awesome. I told him I would let him know when Kitelife had video of Lincoln City up. Jerry and Mary Fincher were there saling from the Fincher’s Aire Force Kite Store booth. I know he sold all his butterfly’s, some UFO’s. Jerry has a list of people waiting for his next order. I didn’t have room to fly my rev w/people. I’ll have to work on space and getting the Rev. simulator on the wall. The cutest kids were the ones you know will become future kitefliers. They spend hours flying in no wind. Persistent, happy, focused~~, their flying! I think I met a child from each age group that was mesmerized with the kites. (And some adults) There was a smile on my face all weekend from this event. Now… it’s time to focus flying outside. It’s time for California’s, Moro Beach’s First… what we hope will be Annual- Kite Festival and Parade. I can’t wait! My costumes are packed and being shipped down. We’re going to have just as much fun at Moro Beach’s festival as we did at the Kids Expo. What ever you do on the weekend, I hope it includes a kite. Last nights speech went well. I stumbled a few times, but nothing bad. All the evaluators did a good job and there were at least 6 good pieces of advice over the last two evenings. There will probably be a person or two come into Kitelife. We had a few of my kite cards with us that we handed out. Darn, I should have had more cards with me. I really did not expect as much interest. I could tell a few people were really interested by the way they followed the speech and intently participated. A few others surprised me afterwards with their interest. Yolanda told me how much they loved to fly kites coming up, but I'm not sure her son will be convinced without trying it himself. OK.. Saturday is really it... my last indoor event for the season... I think. I tried to fly 3 butterfly’s at once in no wind yesterday, but 2 is much more manageable at this time. The kids will be able to play with butterfly, UFO and Rev’s on Sat. I'm shipping costumes to Brian for Moro Beach's Kite festival in two weeks. It's the same weekend as Bend's Festival so I'll be missing that. After giving it some thought I'd rather run to Westport and stay with friends rather then 4 hour drive to the tulip festival. I'd like to get a little outdoor practice in. You guys have loads of fun up there. We'll think good weather at you. BB Penny

I figured I'd blog a little in here since we did have kites and we were indoors. At Toastmasters I gave my 3rd speech from a Speaking to Inform manual. The goals were to demonstrate a product. In under 7 minutes. I gave my Revolution 101 Kite Lesson Usually you are evaluated by one person who will give you advice. Tonight we had a few contest and I was the "target" speaker for the Evaluators that participated in the evaluation portion. They evaluated the good aspects and gave advice on how to improve the speech. One at a time though and the competitors are not in the room during the others oral evaluation of my speech. The evaluators are then judged on their performance and a winner selected. I was also able to hand out two books I'm working on to have evaluated by other people. It was a great opportunity for me to practice my lesson, get feed back and improve it. The feedback was fantastic. More importantly, I had several people approach me afterwards with lots of questions about kites. I let the club know about the Kids Expo this Sat., a few of them will be there, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we see a few more. Steven should get an award, he pretended to be Ron Desporado and John Barassi in my speech and he demonstrated with a stick Rev Kite while I spoke, but a 1.5 red/wh/blu SLE/standard behind him. They loved it when he waved with his right hand for Ron and w/his left as John. I didn’t see his face. (I throw in the demo flyer's names at events so I practiced with their names) Then another club asked if I could be the target speaker for their club! Pretty kewl yeah.... They introduce me like this: Tonight Penny Lingenfelter is doing what she loves to do best.. Teaching us how to fly a kite~ How much fun is that? Hmm, How much longer before John has video from Lincoln City up? I hope he has some good video.. and hope I looked better in the red then the orange. I put on the orange and never showed it to any friends or family except Steve. That man! He loves me enough that he thinks I'm pretty no matter what.. but he could have said.. Honey, you won't be happy with that outfit in pictures. lol Oh well. I took my butterfly kite to my Toastmasters meeting last night as a prop and used the weekend event as the subject for my table topics questions. Gomberg's sell the butterfly, so I am going to have to check those out. The grandkids need one! there is the Kids expo in a couple of weeks and then it's outdoors for me. I'll still be sneaking inside for some personal fly time and to practice the single handle as soon as I get it back from Ralph. This blog (you know that's what it's become right?) will slow down over the warmer months. I'll miss the cold weather that sends me to the warm gym to fly.
