The ground pic gives the kite a metallic sheen. Will it have a similar effect in the air? Very cool looking. Few of my kites in certain light have a somewhat stained glass look. Nothing like that though.

Hey,hey welcome. My first low wind trick kite was a Zephyr. Did learn how to keep it up in 1 to 2 mph. Took a lot of hours and below 3 couldn't do much but axle, axle to tip stand and turtle some. Lot of folks have had difficulty getting it up under 3 or 4 mph. I too live in a semi arid desert at fairly high altitude(6200'). That gives us a slight advantage in the low winds over lower elevations with high humidity. The Zephyr has 9 different adjustments plus 3 more you can do on the stand offs. That takes some time to learn. For the lowest setting I'd take out the tail weight. move the whiskers in and move the bridle ABOVE the top knot pinching the 2 lines togather. I don't think that's a designed setting but it works.I didn't have much success on the stock lines 4 mph and under. Use 50# x 50' to 80'. I'm not good on 50' and use 75' when winds are mostly below 3. Little higher or faster cycles from 0 to 3 I use a 120' set.Flew it a lot for several months. As I got better the constant need for adjustments in my rollercoaster winds got tiresome. Bought a 2nd hand Sky Sport Design(Lam) Tekken sul. First flight was like I'd known it my whole life. Kites rated 2 to 12 but handles gusts to 15 with ease. No adjustments needed on the Tekken and I flew the Z less and less so it's gone.Sounds like you're in the $200.00 US dollar range if you're looking at the Shadow. Heard it's a great kite but having a Dynamic LS could be a issue if broken living where you do. Some Dynamics are hard to find. Shadow is a D12. Few weeks ago I broke a DT12 and replaced it with a Skyshark 5pt. Called the builder to make sure it'd work properly.HQ makes some less expensive 2+ mph kites that are all 4 and 5 mm carbon framed which is cheap, easy to find. Really cheap in bulk from China. Living in a big city maybe the shorter lined urban/street kites might peak your interest. ITW Echo,Level One Amazing outdoor and the Kite Forge Kaiju for examples. From the skill set you've described the Zephyr and 4D still got a lot to teach you. Ya gotta be somewhat careful when researching kites. They're like dust bunnies suddenly appearing out of nowhere. At this stage if you're crazy enough to go by another(by golly I hope so )the Cesium Continental was 2nd place to my newest sul.Close in price to the Shadow. I only know one place that's still selling new Shadows though.

Lucky you Juggler. Please post a video of that heavy vent in 30+ winds while snowing. I need the instruction and motivation LOL.
-
Dang now I'm extremely interested again.Kaiju has always seemed like a lot of kite for the money to me.The sudden gusts I get here make me real leary of most low wind kites.0 to 10 mph in a couple seconds especially this time of year.

Didn't have to take Trixy back to the vet. 3 final shots today and if she makes it to Friday she'll be good to go. Bouncing back really well and confident she'll be fine. Eye medicine for the next week and there should be no issues there either. Last 2 weeks have kinda sucked. Then Rosy showed up this afternoon 1/2 hour later giving it a heckuva try .20 minutes later off she goes.Amazing Her left leg was turned. Took about 2 hours of manipulating it but once repositioned out she came with leg in good shape. Didn't think I whooped and hollered with relief that loud but the dogs got all excited so I guess I did. Out of position births aren't easy to deal with in alpacas. Guess this isn't really much about kites. All I do is play guitar, fly kites and watch alpaca fleece grow. Believe me it's not a bad life at all 😁!!! Guess you folks are just going to have to put up with my meanderings once in awhile.

One of my daughters had a round with fire ants. Not quite as bad but we had to take her to the doc too. With in a hour this morning her face swelled a lot more. Had to make a quick trip for more meds. Pressure is making her eyes bleed some. Got some salve in her eyes and gave her some more shots. Giving her till noon but it's looking like another trip to the vet for more IV. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Last year I had 4 rattlesnake encounters while flying. They're common here but it's always unsettling when running across them. April 20th was are first very warm day. Walking back from flying I noticed a alpaca down. She'd been bitten on her leg and didn't make it. Would have been 3 this summer and been bred for the first time. Big hit not to mention she's missed. Only large animal I've lost to a snake bite.Yesterday morning been flying for about a 1/2 hour. Girls were coming in for a drink when I watched one of last years crias fall. Got to her fast and found she'd been bitten just above her nostrils..Lucky it was a bigger prairie rattler and not a baby or Midget Fade. Squeezed some of the venom out which I couldn't have done if it had been in the deep tissue of one of her legs. Vet did a good job but I didn't think she'd make it.There's no anti venom for camelids. Although pretty sick this morning and not out of the woods yet I think she will. Keep your eyes open folks. Not everything we encounter when flying is nice to hang out with. Photos (2).zip

Hard to imagine. It's been incredible learning duals. Hopefully the 2 quads I have will be enough for now.Heavy vent Djinn.Hmm 🤔. Start collecting them like I have duals and I'll probably have to sleep in the barn with one eye open .

3 hours of the most frustrating attempts at flying I've had in a long time. Better than not flying but all that video tutorial stuff went right out of my head as usual.Things faster than I expected and got a few ground passes (accidently)that were very exciting. Couldn't do the basic launch, straight up,straight down but had some fun spinning out of control trying to figure inputs out. Kites tough and nothing broke. Liked the Red,black, grey colors before I ever got it in the air. When it's flying looks kinda sinister to me which I really dig. Makes me want to flog the heck out of it in a good way. Not knowing a thing about flying a quad I was surprised at how much confidence the kite inspires. Very easy to flare/stall easing the ground hits more often than not. Thing I learned the fastest was bow ties kinda suck. Not knowing speed control when I first got the kite fully powered up(another accident) I knew instantly why some love a Supersonic.Winds went higher than forecast and could have flown the SLE vented. Put up a dual instead. Needed some success LOL.Starting to understand the attraction a bit. For me it might be the finite control I can learn that'll keep me coming back. Very different than the timing needed for just about everything on a dual. Might know in 6 months but it'll probably take a year. About a hour in I did notice things getting a little darker.

Congrats!!! Apparently that Voodoostuff works really well. One post and it's a JB thank you. Pretty gosh darn cool!! Might want to get some advice Wayne 🤣.

Last month winds have been bumpy, gusty, up and down difficult stuff.Seems worse than last spring but ya know how that rose colored glasses thing works. Last 2 days fairly nice SUL winds. Today should be similar with winds around 6 forecasted 10/11 mph this afternoon. My standard B series will be flown today one way or the other. Didn't want to lose focus on my duals and figured when I reached a level 5 skill set that wouldn't be a issue. Should be able to turn off my impulses now and not input the quad like a dual. Well enough to understand the mistake in a panic hopefully.Winds should be at the bottom of the kites range for the first flights lowering the risks of damage. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being utter destruction, 10 no doubt nothing gets damaged I'm at a supremely arrogant and utterly confident 3. That's good enough 😅. One more cup of coffee and let's just go see how dark this dark side really is.

I swear the more time goes by the less and less I trust the local post office. Fujin of the Kaiju should have been here by now. I'll check first thing tomorrow.

How dangerous is having a kite go past over your head?
Breezin replied to spiff's topic in General Single Line
I've only had 2 single line delta kites. 19' and 12' which were more than I wanted to handle on my own.Gusts here can be somewhat wicked at times. Someday's downright evil 😓. Still got a nice reel and some line though. I've decided the Conyne is the way to go.Debating between the ITW Rocky Mountain or Alpine. Leaning towards the Alpine but don't want to make the mistake of getting something to big again. From reading reviews both will fly past their zenith in the lower range and tails are recommended. At times wind dependent some of my duals go past zenith. Turn sideways and from there can do long nice looking descending slides to the windows edge. Flew a new to me old school dual Condor Griffin for the 1st time yesterday. Kite goes past zenith real easy and it's a lot of fun. That slide move is very graceful on it. Having watched gliders and indoor flyer videos maybe there's a similar move to make when a single line goes past your head.Getting it back in front without much stress.Don't really know what I'm blathering about but IF it's possible something to be learned 🤔. -
There it is . Thanks a ton Jaydub. Love watching videos but wouldn't be as good without that link.
-
Yup, watch those a lot. Don't emulate videos very well though. Understand what I'm seeing but feeling it is something else. Plus I get excited and forget. The reading seems to stick better. Not so much a whole trick but as I'm flying I can recognize a point of input even if I don't do it. Reading allows me to see it in my 3rd eye. Makes for quicker reactions and a more intuitive feel. 99.9% of the time the book has always been better than the movie for me.They didn't do to awful bad a job with Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Trying to turn a Terry Pratchett book into a movie would probably suck. Like in kiting it's the nuances in the LINES that grab ya.C'mon now that's funny. Kite lines. The written lines of a book. Alright maybe not so much. At the start his videos were the only ones I could come close to copying. Since I started flying my range of motion has improved a ton. The crisp mechanical way he demonstrates tricks is pretty much the only way I can fly in high winds.
-
AHHHHH taking a break and the link isn't coming up. Hope it's not gone for good cause like a fool I didn't download it. Used this more than anything else. Well I guess I'd better put up the Nighthawk cause it's the best when I fly angry. DANG NAB IT!!!!!!!!

Wow I was celebrating the holiday and forgot about the rest of you folks.Assumed it was going to be in my kite shed recuperating from the journey tomorrow or Thur. at the latest. I heard JB was at the Ferrari plant trying to trade a set if Djinns and some lessons for a new car. Sheesh some people will do anything to drive one of those beasts.Personally I couldn't afford the gas cause I'm saving for another kite.

Welcome. In the trick flying section on page 3 is a great link. Comprehensive trick tutorials posted by Jonesz. I've used it more than videos. Further down the same post is another that takes you to Randy Greenaways videos. I started with Dodd Gross videos and I think most would agree everyone needs to watch his stuff. The Turtle and Axle are basic moves that are used to transition into more advanced tricks. Your next step 😊.Learn them simultaneously so you don't get to frustrated. Stalls are something I practice every time out. Simple as you develop but so important for timing. My slide stalls although getting nicer looking are still difficult to hold all the way from edge to center. Some say that Slides are a low wind trick. I try them no matter the wind speed because it makes me better in other things. My rising Turtles have about the same success ratio. While seemingly simple both the Slide and Rising are difficult to hone. One day I'm doing good and pretty satisfied. Next day winds different, on a different kite and not so good.Heck must be the kite. Grab the kite from the day before and nope it's ALWAYS me.Some kites will do some tricks better than others. My Hydra rolls up a lot easier than my Mind Trick for example. Mind Trick excels in Turtle based tricks but when my TIMING is ON I can roll it up with relative ease.

Yesterday winds started fairly low in the am increasing to a little above 20 at times later on. I always do best in higher winds on days like that. Going out when the wind is already at 20 can be intimidating and difficult to get settled into a groove. Started on 100' x 90# LPG that are a few months old. When winds started going over 15 I should have switched to 150#. Having a lot of fun didn't really think about it.Last time I broke a 90# line was when a gust went over 25. 2 1/2 hours on my vented I was getting gassed. Switched to my much lighter pulling Psycho. Hour in line popped at the kite end sleeve. From wind speed? Maybe. From a nick or to many wraps at times? More likely both.Psycho is so quick lines can be squeaking before you know it. From age? Nope. Breaks happen and are a easy in the field fix. Most breaks happen at the sleeves. When fixed you lose about a foot of line and off ya go. Getting the kite down spinning out of control at a high rate of speed without damage . That is a relief and oddly satisfying. Think you said the Prism set was $65.00. 300 yds of 90# LPG is $85.00 shipped with sleeving. $95.00 for 150#. Better lines and the more economical way to go.When I bought my 1st lineset I got a 130# x 100' HQ set. Although not bad and needed, in hindsight I would have saved for some bulk line. Flew the heck out of those HQ lines though. Think they were marginally better(less adjusting) than my Prism and did get my money's worth. When flying my 1.4 foil I use the stock Prism 150# until they're worn out cause on SMALL foils I too don't think it makes a big difference.

YOU HAVE!!!. It just supports your current affliction . Been at this since 11/17. First started by watching Dodd Gross and Prism tutorials. Kiting began as rehab from a back injury and found I couldn't really move well enough to emulate those videos. Began watching Randy Greenaway and DPMama74 the most. They're tutorial moves were easier for me to physically follow. Still use Dodd's a lot because his points of timing are excellent. Icky tv is fantastic. Not tutorial stuff but conveys the joy of excellent flying extremely well. Like Rob and many others I've had to learn on my own thru videos and forums.EVERY trick has it's stall point. Sooo learning the different types of stalls throughout the window in any wind speed I fly in is the most important skill for me. Something I practice EVERY time out. Not exactly knowing(comete) or not acknowledging the stall point(cascade) leads to my highest rates of failure. Become as ambidextrous as you can.If all one does is right rotating 540's left of center 20' off the ground ya won't catch but maybe 15% of the tricks potential. Even if they're flawless.Catch one center window 5' off the ground successfully in 10 mph I swear you'll giggle for days. Even if it takes days to repeat somewhere in your mind or body there will be the memory of success.Getting hooked on that remembering will drive you to more and more difficult things.Alas 😞 to even the impossible. That leads to some very disturbing sounds such as snap, crackle and pop.Kites are relatively cheap and easy to fix though so go for the gusto. Okay most times easy to fix. Okay cheap compared to uhhh 🤔.Well I don't know what except days of NOT flying can become awful costly to my well being.Does that make me a kite addict. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! NEVER admit that to anyone unless on this forum or speaking very softly to another kiter when in a public place. You might scare off a potential flier before the hook can be set.I agree with Rob but you should look at his bevy of kites. Just researching what he has will gain you a ton of knowledge. Only got to spend about 2 1/2 hours flying today. Even though I got some high end kites spent the time on my Sky Dog Black Dog. Tricky little thing and didn't cost as much as your Hypnotist. Point is a high dollar ( IMO worth every penny) kite won't make a newbie magically better. Some would just frustrate. Yup it truly is time on the lines but hey time on the lines is the point of flying in the 1st place. Learning to trick will make you laugh at yourself repeatedly or you'll have to quit from the insanity of it all 😱. If you're feeling somewhat addicted may I suggest the Premier Addiction. If feeling this stuff might be getting a little crazy may I suggest a Flexifoil Psycho. If you think it maybe possible to get tired of this stuff in the foreseeable future may I suggest the Elliot Burnout.SEE I'm SUPPORTING!! Keep on spinning the wheel little hamster. Tricking won't get you anywhere even after a whole day of flying your butt off. You're pretty much standing in the same place ya started at the end of the day.Get used to birds looking at you like your kinda stupid. It's not that bad after awhile. Hey though, take my 2 cents with a grain of salt.Just trying to be part of the Kite Life Support Group. It's here 24/7 for anyone in need. Hello I'm Breezin and I'm a Kite Nut.

Ha is that even possible when it comes to kites? Already won a fantastic prize and think I really need this too. Won't feel guilty either. Well maybe a wee bit remembering how rotten it makes you feel Wayne 😞. NAWWW 😁!!!. I'll let you pet it though.

Got a Hydra that looks like a Frankensteen project. Been flown more Wilder than it should have. Every time I go to the shed it makes itself as inconspicuous as possible.

This is from duals but it MIGHT relate. When doing roll up stuff I pull to early at times not fully engaging the roll ups. Still heavy handed especially in the higher winds. Pull to hard and I've got similar wear points on all my kites. The Tekkens are cut thru like that. The type of roll ups on Lams kites leave a catch point at the bottom. Flipping the kite there instead of engaged in the roll up has cut the LE.Lam said I've been collapsing the tunnels. End result is a cut.Lucky that it doesn't affect flight. Not knowing exactly where the lines are positioned and pulling to hard is my issue. My GUESS is you've hit that wear point on your kite many times. That may be a spot where people have added wear tabs when tweaking their Revs.JB type upgrade?

Had mine in 40 mph on 100' x 150# Prism dyneema. Only went center window a few times and 40 is the max for me.More time in the center and I think the lines would have failed. Don't have a tail for it yet but it's the only kite I want to put one on. On 65' lines I doubt I could handle it well without one. Started to get some dyneema 220# lines a few times but for 30+ winds think I need 120'x170# Shanti. That's not cheap. There are some 250# x 98' dyneema with winder and straps on Ebay for $6.99 from China. Haven't got them because of the length. From what I've gathered 170# Shanti is stronger than 220# dyneema. In high winds not sure if the high end lines justify their cost but that's where I'm heading. I've got a Mind trick vented that got hit by a 40 mph wind on 150# x 100' LPC and didn't sustain any damage. Don't intend to fly it over 30 but wind happens. The Hawk has pert near twice the pull as the Mind Trick in 30. Maybe for $14.00 I should just splice 2 dyneema sets together and see what 199' feels like LOL.

WoW !! Very shameless plug is very appropropriate 😎.
